The Exploitation of the Economic Resources of Rivers

State University of Batumi (Georgia)

Case studies of ceramic and metallurgic workshops situated on the shores of the rivers and using their waters will be presented. The usage of hydro-power – from the late antique watermills to the modern dams – will also be discussed. We will include the study of the aqueducts and the distribution of water for the irrigation of fields and the urban supply. Concerning fishing, we shall investigate the facilities during the Antiquity. If possible, we will invite participants to discuss modern techniques and installations. Emphasis will be put on the role of the river in the development of similar or different communities and the human impact on rivers and their ecology.
