French Theory and it’s Russian Prehistory

Currently, I am engaged in a research project dedicated to the history of relationships between French critical theory and a range of concepts that arose in Soviet Russia from the 1920s-1930s, which were to become generative for Structuralism and Post-Structuralism from the late 1950s to the early 1980s. In particular, I am concerned with :

  • the “politics of translation”—the motivations behind choice of the specific texts that became the focus of subsequent reception,

  • the manner in which these texts or particular ideas were utilized in intellectual clashes that were emblematic for the French context and its disposition of forces (Structuralism/Post-Structuralism, “New Criticism”/academic tradition, etc.),

  • how this new context redefined the mode of interpretation applied to the ideas of Russian scholars.
